6 May – Six students from Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) embarked on an enriching journey through the International Volunteering Programme hosted by Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) from May 1st to May 5th, 2024 and immersed in the vibrant tapestry of Malaysian culture and social heritage, their experiences were as diverse as they were impactful.
The itinerary unfolded with a captivating Batu Gajah Tour, guiding them through the storied corridors of Kellie’s Castle and the artistic haven of Galeri Rumah Lat. These historical landmarks provided a glimpse into Malaysia’s rich past and artistic legacy, fostering a deep appreciation for the country’s cultural heritage.
Ahmed Mahmoud from Eritrean, a student from the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment, shared his heartfelt reflections on the programme, highlighting the “Anak Angkat” Session as its crowning moment. Engaging in meaningful activities with adopted children and their families, Ahmed expressed, “This is not my first time staying with a Malaysian family, but here, I felt bonds were forged that transcended cultural boundaries, leaving an indelible mark on both students and the families they interacted with.
Ameer, a Bangladeshi student from the Faculty of Leadership and Management at USIM, reflected on his experience, emphasizing the profound impact of the rewang sessions with Keluarga Angkat.
He expressed, “These moments of communal joy and collaboration strengthened bonds as students joined hands with adopted families in shared tasks and heartfelt conversations.” Ameer noted that these intimate gatherings provided valuable insights into Malaysian family dynamics and community spirit, deepening his understanding of the local culture.
Yasir from Somalia added that this program was a very enjoyable trip where we learned a lot, especially about Malaysian culture. The Malaysian food was incredibly delicious, and I can’t forget my lovely host family there. We also made new friends from different countries and exchanged cultures. We look forward to this not being our last trip.
Their journey continued with immersive LDK Slots at local primary and secondary schools, where leadership skills were honed amidst the lively atmosphere of educational empowerment. They then delved into the essence of village life with Sukan Kampung Activities, embracing traditional sports and fostering connections with the welcoming residents.
The programme reached its crescendo with a dazzling Cultural Night, where participants showcased the kaleidoscope of Malaysia’s cultural diversity through vibrant performances, tantalizing cuisine, and engaging displays. Amidst the melodies and rhythms of different traditions, the students celebrated the beauty of unity in diversity, carrying with them memories to cherish and lessons to inspire.
As they bid farewell to UPSI and the communities they had touched, the students departed with hearts full of gratitude and minds enriched by the profound experiences of cultural exchange and service. Their journey was not just a voyage of exploration, but a testament to the transformative power of volunteerism and the enduring bonds forged through shared humanity.
