Gerik, Perak – Two students from Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) recently participated in the International Volunteering Program 2.0, an initiative organized by Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) in collaboration with Unit Kediaman Luar Kampus (UKLK). The program provided a valuable platform for students to explore Malaysian hospitality, embrace cultural diversity, and immerse themselves in the traditional lifestyle of rural communities.
The program commenced with a warm welcome and a comprehensive tour of the UPSI campus. An engaging ice-breaking session brought together participants from various institutions through interactive group activities, effectively setting a positive and collaborative tone for the days ahead.
On the second day, participants visited Gerik Vocational College, where a meaningful sharing session was conducted focusing on higher education aspirations and career planning. Representing USIM, Muhammad Umer inspired the audience by sharing his academic journey and encouraging students to pursue their goals with enthusiasm and resilience.
Following the educational session, the participants proceeded to Kampung Jong, Gerik, where they were graciously welcomed by local host families. Each student was placed with a family, allowing them to experience village life firsthand and engage with local customs, values, and traditions over the course of a two-day homestay.
The following day featured a community sports program aimed at fostering teamwork and camaraderie among the participants and local youth. This was followed by a community service initiative, where volunteers collaborated to beautify the village community center by painting and cleaning. The evening culminated with a traditional village dinner, creating an atmosphere of warmth, unity, and shared joy.
A highlight of the program was the Cultural Night, where students showcased performances representing their home countries. Performances from Chinese and Uzbekistani participants stood out, captivating the audience with cultural songs and traditional dances that celebrated the spirit of international friendship.
The final day in the village was an emotional one, marked by a farewell ceremony and prize distribution. Participants and villagers exchanged words of gratitude and promised to maintain the meaningful bonds formed throughout the program.
The program concluded with an official closing ceremony and dinner at UPSI. Mohammad Al-Hakam Al-Omar from USIM delivered a heartfelt reflection, sharing memorable moments and emphasizing the importance of sustaining the spirit of volunteerism. He encouraged fellow students to continue serving communities and promoting intercultural understanding.
The International Volunteering Program 2.0 was not only an opportunity for cultural exchange but also a testament to the power of youth-driven initiatives in fostering unity, empathy, and global citizenship. It served as a platform to nurture compassionate leaders and community-minded individuals ready to make a difference across borders.
